INTERFERON - A Substance Able to Stop Virus of All Kinds

In England the famous researcher and scientist Sir Alec Isaacs, who died in 1968, found that cells in the body, under the influence of a virus infection, can produce a substance called INTERFERON.

In order to explain the background hereto I should perhaps first mention that virus is a very low-standing organism, which can be placed somewhere between the animal - and plantworld.

Virus can thus not propagate itself by any form of sexual mechanism or partition in the same way as bacteria or other living entities.

Virus consist for the main part of nucleic acid, accordingly DNA and RNA and to a very small extent of protein.
In order to be able to propagate itself, virus must penetrate into a host cell and in this cell, the virus forces its pattern of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) on the host cell’s DNA and when the host cell therefore shall start the reproduction of a new cell, instead of a copy of its own, a DNA pattern is formed in the nucleous of the cell, which is the same as the virus pattern. Therefore the host cell will produce typical virus cells instead of new normal cells, like the original.

When this takes place, the host cell often starts a production of a particular protein, which professor Alec Isaacs discovered and called INTERFERON.

Interferon has the property to stop the production of new cells and therefore no new virus cells arise from this host cell, which contains Interferon.

Interferon is of unspecific effect and can therefore stop all kinds of virus infections. Scientists have now tried to stimulate the production of Interferon in cells in different ways, in order to be able to stop a virus infection quickly for example of measles or of influenza. Thereby trials have been made to apply nucleic acid in the environment of the cell, hoping that the cell would suspect that this nucleic acid was a virus and therefore start an Interferon production.

It became however evident, that nucleic acid did not have the power to penetrate into a living cell in the same manner as a virus. Trials have then been made with nuclease, an enzyme, but also this turned out to be uncertain even if it in some cases managed to have some effect.

In Sweden a fermented pollenconcentrate, developed by AB Cernelle of Engelholm, is of interest because it has the power to prevent and reduce common virus infections. There are two kinds of pollenconcentrate, Cernitin T 60 and Cernitin GBX.

In Cernitin T 60 there are deoxyribosides intended to form DNA and RNA in connection with the fertilisation of plants.
Such deoxyribosides can penetrate a cell wall and be absorbed by the cell. They have therefore the possibility to be able to stimulate the Interferon production and thereby increase the normal resistance against a virus attack, such as Flu.

There is a difference between a vaccination with a virus vaccine, where vaccination is made against a specific type of virus and Interferon which is formed in the cell and which is effective against different types of virus. The vaccine is effective only against virus attack from one specific virus. If the cells can be stimulated to produce Interferon protection will be gained against most types of virus.

Research in this field is proceeding and England has in the field a leading position. Such research will by and by give us more effective scope in preventing epidemics of virus infections.
